Revenue per student
|
|
California schools receive less funding per student than schools in approximately 40 other states. However, BHUSD receives significantly more revenue per student than almost every other district in California. The difference of over $1,000 per student (in most cases) multiplied by our enrollment of approximately 5,250 students means that we have over $5 million more to spend each year than we would have if we received the same funding as the average district. I was surprised to see so much variation in the relationship between annual revenues and student achievement. Significant variations can be explained by the fact that some districts spend their money more efficiently than others, and this may account for all of the variations from the trendline in the third chart, but my intuition is that some of the other factors that I have analyzed (e.g. percentage of English learners, percentage of students qualifying for free/reduced price lunches & teacher-student ratios) are causing these variations. I wish our staff would prepare an analysis of the budget cuts that they would recommend if our funding was reduced to the level of the average district, so that the Board and the community could take a fresh, educated look at how we are spending our annual rental income of more than $6 million. My sense is that we could be far more efficient. Click here for an analysis of our gross funding and here for an analysis (consisting of several linked pages) of how we are spending these extra funds.
